Curious, I always thought that system-wise, rogue has a harder time being a team player. A Paladin is a good shield, and is quite handy against enemy with fear or other savable special attacks, and the higher level you go the more there are. I am not certain he is a better solo-er then Cleric, though.
If there is a single character that the team wait for most, both in term of in-game time and out-game time, it usually is the rogue, scouting corridors and searching every square inch of any suspicious room. And maybe even a sole combat or two so she can keep the loot, while everyone else engage with their annoying PSP. At least the team can tag along and aid another when the bard goes gathering information...
Oh, when I say "team-player", I mean in the story, not in battlefield.
Pal can play a better role in combat than rogue, but WHY does a pal go adventure with other lads? "Our rogue is evil? You quit or I quit!", or something like that. Unless DM restricts everyone to be Good, or to believe in the same god, Pal barely fits in the team.
Rogue, on the other hand, is necessary to be in the team. Not only in dungeons are rogues needed, but also in cities where we need someone to gather some information or do something sneakly (when there's no bard).
